How Reviews Help

Understand the touch. Then fix it.

Coaches visually show what happened — then turn it into a clear training plan.

Video explanation
Find it. Then understand it.

Coaches mark the important moments and visually draw on the video so the issue becomes obvious. Then parents and fencers can zoom, pan, and watch in slow motion to clearly see what happened.

Train with a plan

Every review ends with clear training priorities — what to fix, what to practice, and what to focus on next.

FencingBuddies AI bout analysis showing strengths, weaknesses, tactical sections and practice goals

Strengths

  • Effective parry-ripostes: Strong and well-timed, particularly at 0:35 0:54 1:21 1:51 — converting defense into successful touches.
  • Good lunge extension: Deep and powerful lunge after parry, maximizing reach and closing distance effectively (0:56 1:23 2:19).
  • Maintains offensive pressure: Effectively forces opponent to react with sustained forward attacks, as seen at 1:36.

Weaknesses

  • Right-of-way confusion: Attacks initiated without clear right-of-way, leading to touches against (0:06 0:49).
  • Inconsistent parry effectiveness: Parries sometimes late or insufficiently firm, resulting in touches against (1:30 2:00 2:46).
  • Linear retreat: Retreating too linearly without speed or angle, allowing opponent to close distance (2:07).

Offense

  • Primarily initiates via footwork advance then attack, though sometimes lacks clear right-of-way.
  • Best actions stem from strong parry followed by immediate riposte — good defensive-to-offensive transition.
  • Could use more blade preparation or tempo changes to draw reactions before committing.

Defense

  • Predominantly relies on parry 4 and 6 as primary defensive actions.
  • Distance management falters, allowing opponent into attacking range too easily (2:00).
  • Blade reactions quick but consistency in firmness and angle needs work.

Footwork

  • Mix of small advances and retreats, but rhythm is predictable — opponent can anticipate.
  • Lunge for riposte is powerful and well-extended (0:56 1:23).
  • Recovery from lunges generally good; sometimes lingers after the touch.

Form & posture

  • En garde position stable — good base for movement.
  • Guard hand sometimes held low or static, missing opportunity to aid balance.
  • Weapon arm extension good during final lunge phase.

Tactical analysis

  • Main pattern: reactive defense, looking for parry-riposte rather than setting up attacks.
  • Predictable rhythm makes it easier for opponent to time attacks or retreats.
  • Clearer right-of-way assessment needed before committing to attacks.

Recommended drills

  • Right-of-way awareness: Scenarios with coach dictating priority, focusing on blade preparation.
  • Targeted parry drills: Parry 4 and 6 with focus on firmness and precise blade angle.
  • Explosive retreat + counter-attack: Quick angled retreats followed by immediate counter-attacks.
  • Distance control: Advances and retreats reacting to coach footwork cues to establish ideal range.

See where your fencer ranks.

TUFR is our proprietary rating system — it tracks opponent strength, score margins, and recency across every youth division. No more guessing if your fencer is improving. You'll know.

Strength of Schedule
Beating a top-20 fencer counts more than beating an unrated one.
Margin Matters
A 15-3 win moves the needle more than a 5-4 squeaker.
Recency Weighted
Recent results matter most. Ratings reflect where your fencer is now, not six months ago.

Bout volume and point differential
How the TUFR algorithm thinks
Who did you beat?
Opponent rating is factored into every result. A win over a top fencer moves your rating far more than the same score against an unrated opponent.
By how much?
Score margin is weighted logarithmically. A dominant 15–3 victory signals real separation; a 5–4 nail-biter barely moves the needle.
How recent?
Results decay over time with a six-month half-life. Your rating reflects where you are right now — not where you were last season.

Proprietary algorithm. Not a simple win/loss counter.
